Reflections on Life's Journeys
Uneven Terrain

Now that the Thanksgiving holiday is over, are you still grateful? It’s a whole lot easier to give thanks when the terrain of your life is smooth and assists you with your movement. But when the terrain is uneven, sometimes so is your gait, depending on the decisions you make. If you make wise decisions during the shaky times, then you can bring a healthy balance to your wobbly dilemmas.

When my daughter was a toddler, a good friend who was an Occupational Therapist pointed out something that shocked me. She had noticed that Kenya wobbled in the grassy area of our front yard, but that she walked straight and upright when she reached the paved walkway.

I had not noticed my daughter’s unsteady gait before then. Or rather, I may have subconsciously noticed it but thought it was normal for a child her age. Simply put, because she didn’t fall down I didn’t think that her uneven gait was unusual. But the well-trained eye of a professional spotted it right away.

Over the next several days I noticed that to keep from falling over, my daughter compensated for her shaky gait. That made sense to me, but as her mother, I needed to cure the problem if a cure existed. I didn’t want her to go through life compensating or compromising in some other area of her posture in order to deceive her mind into thinking that she was actually walking straight.

“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall”. The Holy Bible  (I Corinthians 10:12 – ASV)

Life Deficiencies

It turned out that a vitamin-D deficiency had caused Rickets in my daughter. Rickets is a disease that is found usually in children. It is caused by a vitamin D deficiency, and makes the bones become soft. I immediately added a liquid vitamin D supplement into my daughter’s diet, and within two weeks her condition improved so much that we couldn’t even tell that she’d had the condition in the first place.

You know, we sometimes wobble through life because of deficiencies of our own. We have spiritual deficiencies, relationship deficiencies, wisdom deficiencies, love deficiencies. These things can be righted if we put forth the effort to supplement our lives with the right things.

So let me ask you; where are the uneven terrains of your life? Perhaps it’s in your spiritual life, or in your family or community relations.  Pay close attention to your gait and notice the situations of your life that make you wobble. But be grateful because it might reveal some deficiencies that you can take care of. Just make sure that you’re not overcompensating and deceiving yourself into thinking that your gait is straight when it is not. Only you know what areas of your life you need to apply this principle. Is your terrain uneven? Ask yourself if you can do something about it.  We should all consider this life principle.

A Long Way To Go

Because life is a long journey, from time to time we will come across patches of uneven terrain. But don’t worry that the areas that are causing you to wobble may not be causing someone else to wobble.  Perhaps right now you have what I call, “life-rickets”. But don’t despair. Perhaps it’s just a matter of adding a little of something that is lacking. It may not be a huge undertaking, but one that should be carried out with a fierce determination to make something better.

The grassy area of our front yard didn’t cause me to walk with an uneven gait, as it did my daughter. Consequently, what may cause someone else to wobble as they walk out their life, might be a smooth walk for you. So don’t make comparisons and never judge another individual. You never know how hard they are working to stay upright.

In All Fairness

In all fairness, sometimes we do have to compromise or compensate to stay upright, even though we may have to keep wobbling through some areas of our life. I believe that is okay, too. Life really is sort of a balancing act, with the operative word being balance. Does your life have balance? My nearly two-year old daughter figured out that she had to compensate until I figured out a way to help her. She simply did what she had to do to not fall down. Perhaps there is a life lesson in that for all of us. I know it is for me. Do what you have to do to stay upright.

Wishing you God’s highest and best……

Denise
